Abstract:
»The chapter focuses on the issues of the historical past in current relations between Japan and the countries of the Korean Peninsula. The authors argue that the period of Japan’s rule on the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945 is remembered by the Korean people as a time of suppression and national humiliation. In 1965, Seoul and Tokyo normalized bilateral relations, but this attempt was in many ways imperfect, since it excluded North Korea, deliberately ignored some historical issues (e.g. Dokdo) or did not go into detail on others (e.g. comfort women). The unifying force of animosity towards Japan in Korean politics is so strong that it often serves as a point on which North and South Korea’s positions converge.«
